As we age, the face loses volume because of subcutaneous fat loss. These can be in specific areas on the face. The most common are under eyes and cheeks.
What are Fillers?
Dermal Fillers help to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face Volume enhancement can also be done for other areas of the face or body just to make them look more youthful.
Fillers can be temporary or permanent. The most commonly used temporary fillers now are JUVEDERM, RESTYLANE and the permanent filler most often used here is AQUAMID.
For the first instance it is always advisable to use temporary filler so one can get an idea as to how it looks.
Dermal Fillers can be used to
- Plump thin lips (Lip Fillers)
- Enhance shallow contours
- Soften facial creases and wrinkles (Facial Fillers)
- Improve the appearance of recessed scars (Hypertrophic Scars)
Dermal fillers are very helpful in those with early signs of aging or as an addition to someone already undergoing facial skin rejuvenation surgery.
FACIAL CONTOURING with Fillers:
Though an off label use sometimes we can enhance bony contours with the use of fillers. Most commonly it is done to enhance the jaw bone or the cheek bone. The filler is one which adds volume and is placed in a plane just close to the bone. Decent results can be expected but with realistic expectations. The results are not comparable to surgical Bony augmentations.
Who can do Fillers procedure?
Anyone who is generally fit preferably doesn’t smoke and has realistic goals on what they are looking to enhance their appearance.
Some patients might actually require a formal Facelift or Blepharoplasty. Non-surgical rejuvenation treatments cannot achieve the same results but may help delay the time for the surgical intervention.
Dermal Fillers recovery
There is no downtime with Dermal Fillers. You can resume most activities right away. But any strenuous activity is preferably avoided.
Also it is advisable not to do it just before a major public or TV appearance. The fillers absorb water and achieve a smoother and fuller look by about a week.
Your initial appearance after treatment with any dermal filler may include an “over-filled” appearance to the treated areas, mild swelling or bruising and temporary numbness or redness
These improve within a matter of hours or just a few days.
Dermal Fillers risks
The decision to use fillers is extremely personal.
Your plastic surgeon and/ or staff will explain, in detail, any risks.
You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the fillers procedure, as well as the risks and potential complications.
Complications from Dermal Fillers are uncommon. Some common ones being:
- Bruising, bleeding from the injection site, swelling
- Damage to the skin that result in a wound and possible scarring
- Infection at the injection site
- Lumps, palpability of the filler under the surface of the skin
- Skin redness, rash with itching
- Under- or over-correction of wrinkles.
Although good results are expected, there is no guarantee.
In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single fillers procedure.
Most of the temporary fillers will dissolve over a period of time ranging from 4 months to a year depending on the type of fillers used, and they have to be repeated.
